The Reparations Project has three project phases, with the ultimate goal of developing a new theatrical work that supports the case for making slavery reparations in the United States.
In Phase 1, we researched and developed a Mock Trial packet, based on a fictional lawsuit between descendants of slaves and descendants of slave owners.
CURRENT PHASE *** In Phase 2, we are hosting a Community Presentation of The Mock Trial at The Pear Theatre in Mountain View in August 2024 (tickets and more information: https://thepear.vbotickets.com/events) and making the trial packet available to classrooms.
In Phase 3 , we will develop The Reparations Play.
ON-GOING
We are seeking graduate, undergraduate and select high school educators who are interested in planning a mock-reparations trial assignment into their academic curriculum. We will provide:
-
All materials needed to hold a mock-trial of a fictional lawsuit between the descendants of former slaves against the descendants of former slave-holders (including background/historical documents, witness lists, court documents and exhibits, as well as jury and participant instructions and suggested questions for witnesses in the trial);
-
A recording of the Community Presentation of our Mock Trial.
If you are interested in participating in this project, please drop us an email to let us know where you teach, what course you would incorporate this assignment into, and any questions you might have. We will be in touch to set up a meeting with your institution.
